UTM Virtualization for TrollStore

Project Sandcastle allows users to run Android and Linux on iPhones by putting the operating system into RAMDisk. However, this necessitates completing a number of special requirements. Enter UTM, an iOS virtualization app that allows users to run Windows or Linux virtual machines directly on their iPhones. Recently, a version of UTM dedicated to TrollStore compatible devices was published.

UTM for iOS has been released in a variety of packages geared to specific system conditions. These include a customised UTM for Jailbreak, a standard UTM IPA file optimised for sideloading with JIT support, a specialised version for TrollStore with a full set of capabilities, and a standard UTM IPA that does not support JIT.

UTM is an iOS version of a programme meant to run desktop operating systems on your iPhone or iPad. This versatile programme allows users to easily run Windows, Linux, and other operating systems on their iOS devices at impressive speeds. It makes iOS versions 11-16 compatible with iDevices, allowing for easier installation via sideloading.

UTM’s features and capabilities differ depending on the version you choose. For example, running UTM for TrollStore or performing a jailbreak enables compatibility for technologies such as JIT, Hypervisor (M1 Pad), and USB. However, if you use UTM SE, JIT support is missing (leading in poorer performance), but it is compatible with all signature services.

Much of the heavy lifting in UTM, an iOS virtualization software, is accomplished by qemu. We are unable to use the KVM accelerator since iOS devices do not enable hardware virtualization. Instead, the TCG accelerator is used, which combines dynamic code translation and JIT compilation. Additionally, UTM has a SPICE client designed specifically for metal. UTM for iOS also supports external keyboards, mice, touchpads, and controllers.

Accessing UTM preferences is simple: open the iOS Settings app and look for the “UTM” section. However, if UTM was installed using TrollStore, the preferences will not be accessible through this way. Nevertheless, you can manually modify the preferences data using a third-party application.

When establishing a QEMU backend VM with GPU acceleration, users can choose between multiple renderer backends. Some apps may require or function efficiently with a specific backend. If unsure, stick with the default configuration.

By default, the operating system renders each frame in sync with the current display’s refresh rate. However, in cases where performance-intensive programmes cause frame stalls and irregular frame timings, increasing the desired frame rate can give a more consistent user experience.

UTM supports both gesture and cursor modes. In cursor mode, dragging your finger causes the pointer on the screen to move relative to it. This option enables mouse acceleration, which improves the responsiveness and smoothness of pointer movements.

UTM provides numerous ways for interacting with the virtual machine (VM) display. Clicking and holding the mouse button results in a left mouse click. To do a right mouse click, simply tap the screen and release immediately. You can move the VM display by dragging it across the screen. In addition, to imitate scrolling with the mouse wheel, swipe in the desired direction on the screen. These operations allow you to smoothly browse and manage the virtual reality display.

To execute UTM in the background, location access must be enabled. Even with this access, if the virtual machine (VM) consumes too much memory, the operating system reserves the right to stop its operation.

UTM can only be installed on your device using the TrollStore or TrollStore 2 IPA installers. When using other tools such as Sideloadly, AltStore, Bullfrog Assistant, or Esign, the application may not operate optimally. There are several UTM programmes for different contexts. Use TeollStore’s specialised UTM for TrollStore IPA.

Step 1: Install TrollStore on iOS using the How to Install TrollStore 2 instructions.

Step 2: Download UTM IPA from the link at the top of this page.

Step 3: Open TrollStore 2 from your Home Screen.

Step 4: Import UTM IPA to TrollStore 2.

Step 5: Proceed with the installation process.

Step 6: Open the Settings app and go to Privacy & Security.

Step 7. In the Security section, select Developer Mode.

Step 8: Enable Developer Mode and restart your device.

Step 9: Connect your iPhone to a PC or Mac and enable developer mode.

Step 10: Open UTM from the Home Screen.

Tipa files are essentially IPAs with changed extensions. TrollStore recognises these files specifically, and they are often incompatible with standard IPA installs.

  1. Hypervisor for iOS requires an M1 iPad.
  2. 2. To activate JIT, you may need to use a separate JIT enabler, such as Jitterbug or Jitstreamer.
